Cove 2 v Stoke Green Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 12 May 2012 at 13.00
Match was Drawn

Match report So here we are, after a very successful league last year, Stoke Green find themselves in Division 4b where they play Cove 2 as a league opener. It was a long grind for the batsmen and bowlers as The Green walked away with 12 points in a winning draw.

Cove won the toss and decided to bowl first on what looked like a decent wicket. The Greens didn't get off to the best of starts as Vishal Arjan fell for a duck. Nadeem Chowdhry quick opening cameo of 25 gave them some respite but they were struggling at 40-3. However, the middle order came to the rescue as Saud Ahmed and Raja Ifraz provided them with a partnership of 53. Ahmed then fell on a well-made 31 which meant skipper Sukh Dhillon arrived the crease. They both piled on the runs together in a 66-run partnership which took the score upto 165. Dhillon (25) and Ifraz (69) then fell in quick succession which reduced The Greens to 178-7. Irham Mughal and Nav Sahota tried to push the score upto 200 but could only manage 198 in 52 overs.

In reply, openers Irham Mughal and Richard Parker provided the away team with an economical start. Dahron Pitt and Ifraz Raja then came onto bowl taking 4 wickets between them leaving Cove at 96-5. Cove then gave up chasing the score and bowling became difficult as the pitch had nothing more to offer. Tim Gillham then took 2 wickets in an over to give some hope to The Greens but they couldn't take the final 2 wickets. The teams bowling effort was backed by a marathon spell by Parker who only leaked 33 runs in 18 overs without any luck of a wicket.

Stoke Green had played out 100 overs for the first time in 2 seasons which allowed The Greens to take back many positives.

“After a long winter preparing and with a few fresh faces coming in, the team was buzzing and up for the tough season ahead.
The lads showed early signs of nerves in the game when we were put in to bat on a lively wicket, but we grinded down and showed real fight to get a decent score on the board. I was a little disappointed Cove gave up chasing the target so early which made for a frustrating afternoon. However, our bowlers showed great skill and ability to put them under pressure on a wicket that became very easy to bat on later in the day.
Overall lots of positives from the first game and I hope we build on these into the next game.” - skipper Sukh Dhillon.
