Stoke Green Cricket Club 4th XI v Newbury 3 on Sat 20 Jul 2019 at 13:00
Stoke Green Cricket Club Won by 151 runs
Match report
This week saw our return to Sefton after a downpour through the night and the morning. The pitch looked green and when the useless tosser Taher lost his tossing Newbury put us in to bat expecting the pitch to misbehave. Alas it was only our batsmen who would do the misbehaving - abusing the Newbury bowling!
Things started well with Ashish and Allen getting off to a solid start against their 2 best bowlers and having an opening partnership of 45 in the first 9 overs until Allen on 20 skied one to a good catch by their young fielder. Ashish lasted 4 more overs before being caught behind off the same youngster. This bought Ravi to the middle and after last weeks duck he was in a mean mood, Senthil with him had a dodgy knee and wasn't in the mood for running so the two simply started smashing it! In only 22 overs they hit 98 together until Senthil missed a straight one and kicked it with his toe instead, out LBW on 57 off 40 balls. Ravi and Arun continued the bludgeoning. In only 7 overs they smashed 64 runs together with Arun hitting 47 including 4 6's before being caught and bowled going for his 50. Augi was only their a short while getting 6. But then James joined Ravi. Ravi had played an exceptional innings he hit 9 4's and 7 6's and went passed 100 off only 68 balls!!! He and James hit 68 off the last 5 overs as we amassed an amazing 318 off 40 overs.
Tea was rushed up from Stoke Green and enjoyed and we went out to field
From the start Newbury were not looking to smash the runs they required and more looking to play the overs and accumulate the points. Once again taking catches were our downfall - with father son opening pair of Gurpreet and Amar bowling well - a catch went to Allen, the batsman survived, one to james, a batsman survived, a catch to Amar, a batsman survive and then again! Our first breakthru came after a half stop by allen lured them into a run before he recovered to throw and get a run out! Ashish managed to get the first catch held by Allen making up for his first drop and then an over later Mark took a wicket with his first ball with a catch to Ashish. Then the drops followed again - Allen again. Their captain and an opener then started to amass some runs and it was James who broke their partnership. We were approaching the end when skipper turned to Augi for a few overs to great affect. He clean bowled the captain, then clean bowled the youngster and then an over later clean bowled another ending on 3-12. For the final over Taher bought himself on for his customary over for the season. Second ball he got a clean bowled!!! There was much rejoicing. They ended on 167-8 leaving our margin of victory 151 runs.
Now second in the league we face Wargrave next week however where this game plays is still not defined.
