Burnham 4 v Stoke Green Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 05 Sep 2020 at 12:30

Match report
For 6 years i have written these reports - sometimes comical, sometimes factual, but always with a smile on my face and having no idea if they are read or not (though i did hear one opposition player say he thought they were good fun once). For anyone that does read them i hope you have enjoyed them and made you chuckle. This alas is my last as it was the last game I will play for Stoke Green.
This week took us to Burnham 4s and saw the return of the illustrious ex-3s captain James. But it didn't change the way the game went. The key difference was that we bowled first for the first time this year meaning our bowlers got some actual overs in for a change. Young Awais and Feroz - definite future top bowlers for the club opened the bowling but with little luck as their openers got set in, unfortunately we started with 9 as James was fashionably late and Augi was just absurdly late as he had some sort of dodgy camera fitted to his car (ask Feroz he'll tell you). A 100 run partnership ensued and it was only the introduction of a bit of leg spin from Amar that finally saw the first wicket to a nice catch from Awais. Burnhams opener went past 50 and it was clear he was not a standard 4th team player. Usman tried some loopy and fast intertwinned bowling and Omaire bowled with no luck also. Shockingly it was my own introduction with 14 overs to go that saw us start to make inroads. A rank full toss always works as we have always said s**t gets wickets. And I got the opener on 65. After 2 dropped catches off my bowling I got the third wicket of the game as Usman took a nice one handed grab. Then we had the return of the spin twins who don't turn it with James at one end and me at the other - memories of 3rd team matches of old. James got a nice clean bowled as he finally bowled a straight one and i then got a few in a row and claimed a joyful 5 wickets in my last game! Feroz got a penultimate over wicket caught....of course by me. and at the end of 40 overs we were set 241-9 as Augi fielded for 9 of them!!!!
I miss tea!
Our batting unfortunately followed a similar pattern to recent matches. They had two excellent bowlers, again playing in the team below their level. We had only 2 player make double figures and were sadly all out for 53. Extras topped scored.... thank goodness for wides.
I would like to thank anyone that has read my reports as its meant they have been worth it. And i would like to thank all at stoke green for their friendship and teamship in my 26 years at the club. I have enjoyed every year (even the infamous Nilesh leaving year and the year of the disciplinaries). I playied for every level at the club 1s, 2s, 3s and 4s, winning the first team ball, the 4th team ball and the prize for excellence on the field of play. I have captained teams for the 3s, the 4s and on a sunday with absolute pride. My original captain married my sister. I served on the committee 3 times and was secretary for 2 periods. My heart will always be at Stoke Green and i wish everyone all the best. Look after the place for me!
This is Mark Ward, signing off!
