Stoke Green Cricket Club 4th XI v Farnham common 3 on Sat 01 Aug 2020 at 13:00
Stoke Green Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket
Match report
Finally 11 weeks in from what should have been the start of the 2020 season the 4s got underway. As Corona Virus delayed everything and meant no celebrating via touching, ball cleansing every 6 overs and no showers - which is why we haven't seen James yet I imagine - the 4s played their first game at their new home of Mercian Way recreation ground which turn out to be not a bad ground at all! As long as you don't ask the guy who Augi managed to hit in the head.
Our useless tosser of a captain lost his toss and we were inserted for our first bat of the season. Rust had set in. Very quickly we were 21-3 as Allen and Ibrahim forgot they needed to hit the ball to stop it hitting their wickets and Hannan thought he was playing catch with the keeper. But Amar and Augi knew what to do! Exactly 100 runs later by the 22nd over they had moved us to 121-3 until Augi also failed to use his Bat. Mark had watched with his pads on for so long he didn't even bother giving batting a go and was out first ball. Captain Marvel Taher helped Amar to settle the ship for a while as Taher hit some 4s whilst apparently faking a heart attack to Amar - chest pain and left arm pain for Taher apparently is normal. But T Dogg went down to lack of use of his bat as well as he was bowled on 16. Amar had gone past 50 by now though and was eventually out on 56 after a good knock. The tail enders did what tailenders do and added a few and we set 177. We were content with this target.
Unfortunately there was no tea allowed due to covid restrictions - is this the way of the future to bring a packed lunch? Once Taher had finished his 3 course meal tea from home we went out to field. Looking quite stiff Feroz and Mannan got us started and Mannan was I the wickets from the start. Luckily their batsman had also forgotten that you need to hit the ball to stop it hitting the wickets and their opener fell and then the number 3 edged one into Mark's leaping hands at slip. Latif and Moody took over the bowling to roll back the years and took wickets each with catches for the octopus suction technology behind the stumps and Allen held on to a catch with moody's first ball! Inspirational bowling change from Taher. But from here Farnham common put on a recovery as their captain scored a 50. We had some close chances but finger tips don't take catches. A change to Ibrahim bought an amazing salmon like dive from Taher to take a stunning catch of their skipper. Great captain on captain action. Hannan also took a wicket shortly after. But they were still scoring runs and as Mark and Augi took over Farnham only needed 35 to win. But the captain had made that inspirational change again as Mark took a wicket with his first ball as Ibrahim took an excellent boundary catch after Mark had removed the pin and chucked the grenade. But runs were trickling through and some unfortunate fielding meant their number 8 got to 18 but then some luck - Allen dropped a catch off Mark but it was all tactical as it passed the ball to Feroz who had a direct hit from the deep to run him out! Mark quickly got another bowled and it was touch and go. They needed 10 and we needed one wicket! Augi tried to knock the batsman out with a shot to the head but the batsman rode the blow well. Their numbers 10 and 11 got some lucky runs and we couldn't find that last wicket as unfortunately 4 byes ended the game. Farnham won by 1 wicket.
A very enjoyable match to start the 2020 season for us, but narrowly missed out on the win.
Next week we go to Cookham Dean
