NPL Teddington v Stoke Green Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 11 Aug 2012 at 13.00
Stoke Green Cricket Club Won by 156 runs
Match report
After last weeks embarassing defeat, Stoke Green bounced back and put in an all-round solid performance to beat NPL Teddington by 156 runs.
Skipper Sukh Dhillon won the toss and elected to bat first on a pretty flat track on a hot day. The Greens didn't get off to the best of starts as both openers Gully Khan (8) and Clive Bourne (10) failed leaving them at 21-2. Tim Gillham provided SG with yet another gritty innings as Saud Ahmed also kept his head down, rotating the strike with ease while stroking regular boundaries. A partnership of 69 put the visitors back on track however, Gillham fell for 31 after a direct hit run-out. Vishal Arjan who had also been struggling for runs, came back strongly on a wicket that suited his batting style. He played himself to an elegant half-century, as did Ahmed. Arjan then got caught mis-cueing a pull shot but Ahmed just piled on the runs. His magical stroke-play elated him to Stoke Green's first league century. Raja Ifraz came and went for a duck but a quick-fire 17 off 10 balls from Dahron Pitt propelled the score to 250-5 where Dhillon decided enough was enough and declared the innings 5 overs early. Ahmed remained unbeaten with 109*.
In reply, openers Irham Mughal and Dahron Pitt kept things tight as they made it very difficult for NPL to make runs. Mughal then had both openers caught behind as NPL were 40-2 leaving their middle order exposed, while the ball was still swinging. A lazy run from NPL provided The Greens with another break-through but Mughal continued his fine form with the ball knocking over 2 more as NPL were completely out of it at 59-5. Raja Ifraz then came on as first change who bowled a quick, fiery spell to rip through the tail, taking 5 wickets for just 11 runs! NPL were finally bundled out for just 94. It was a very dominating batting and bowling performance from the visitors who actually had one of their weakest sides out.
Next week Stoke Green host Reading as they look to guaruntee promotion, already 15 points clear of 2nd placed Kew. But with Cove back in contention, the table is starting to look much tighter.
This is what the captain had to say, “The guys all knew they need to bounce back after the poor performance last week. I think they learned from some mistakes and really went at the task well. We batted much more sensibly and Saud played a gem of an innings to set up another declaration.
We bowled with great discipline and gave away very little, Irham bowled a great spell up front and pushed Teddington on the back foot straight away. He blew away the top order to set from which they never recovered. Ifraz bowled one the quickest spells I’ve seen and bounced out a few of their batsmen, he showed good aggression and accuracy.
Hopefully we will take this discipline and aggression into our next few games to set up a good promotion push.”
