NPL 2 v Stoke Green Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 05 May 2018 at 13:00
Stoke Green Cricket Club Won by 5 wkts
Match report
The one with the perfect run chase
After having all of april's potential friendlies rained off, the sun finally came out for the first league game of the season against NPL. Clearly some of our players were still in hibernation as we started late with 9 players and only got our full 11 after 21 overs!
We started off well as new skipper Taimoor won the toss and elected to field. Maz opened with new boy As'ad. As'ad struck first with an easy catch to Mark and then Maz soon evened up the wkt numbers with his first with an amazing diving catch from keeper Taher. Skipper said it was like free willy diving to freedom with a cricket ball stuck in his fin! A partnership for NPl then developed with their opener moving towards 50. It was Ben who clean bowled his partner though after pushing the field back expecting a short ball he pitched it up and took off stump. It was Chohan coming on that changed the innings as he clean bowled the opener on 48, and then followed that up with another. He then couldn't stay out the game as he caught well to hannan getting his first of the season. A third soon followed for Cho before another partnership built between 2 of their youngsters. as the overs started to run out is was the return of Maz that bought the end closer as he cleaned up the youngster. Mark then got the captain in the penultimate over before Maz cleaned up with a second catch to Mark with 2 balls remaining. Target set was 185
All in all, wickets shared around nicely. Far tooooooooo many wides, 25. A couple of catches put down but fielding as a whole was ok. But timekeeping must be sorted, as must our over rate as 3 hours and 15 minutes is too long for 40 overs!
Tea was had and out to bat strode Clive and Timmy to get us off to a good start. Clive continued his form at the end of last season with some fine striking including 3 lovely 6s over the top and into the neighbours gardens! The run rate was steady until Clive fell on 54 - having fallen on 44 when his knee gave way - after partnership of 87 off 18 overs. Timmy then fell shortly after on 26 and things slowed up for a while. Taher decided he didn't like straight bowling so missed it and walked off and then 3rd team debutant Abu followed shortly after and we had gone from 87-0 to 109-4 in 7 overs. James was in though and looking commanding, Cho kept with him to push the score to 143, But we still needed 43 off 6 overs when he fell and Mark came to the crease. It all got close. Mark and James kept the singles ticking and then James hit a couple of boundaries - it was a no ball hit for 4 when we had 3 overs left needing 22 that changed the outlook. we needed 15 off last 2 overs and with some quick running - shocking with one of them being james - we needed 7 off the last over. 3 big hits from James and it was all done, a crunching 4 to cow corner ended the game with 2 balls to spare.
Good first 20 point win of the year, good first win for captain Taimoor - next week, home vs chalfont st peter
