Stoke Green Cricket Club 2nd XI v Wokingham 3 on Sat 24 May 2014 at 13:00
Match was Abandoned due to bad light
Match report
After a big victory Stoke Green welcomed Wokingham cricket club on what turned out to be a wet and grey day. Stoke Green won the toss and captain Farhan Sheikh once again elected to bat first.
The Green’s struggled early on as Wokingham picked up the early wickets of Nav Sahota, Syed Kazmi and Farhan Sheikh. The experienced Clive Bourne and Tim Gillham steadied the ship and provided some stability but Gillham soon departed for 15 bringing the in-form Gulfraz Khan to the crease. With the on off rainfall throughout the day there was a delay in the innings as the players had to wait for the bad weather to subside, once clear the Greens resumed their innings. Khan was his usual positive self with C.Bourne providing strong support, both batsmen got to individual scores of 30 and 31 respectively before getting out. Next in was Ifraz Khan who played a vital knock of 22 not out nudging the ball around for singles on what proved to be a tough day and pitch to bat on. Harry Kibble’s cameo of 33 pushed Stoke Green to a solid total of 168 in tough batting conditions.
Heavy rain pouring down during the tea break meant another delay to the game as Stoke Green were eager to go out and defend a good total. Once the weather stopped the playing conditions were analysed by the umpire who allowed the innings to go ahead. A special mention must be given to the umpire for his patience throughout a stop start day and for allowing the match to go ahead.
Gulfraz Khan was up to his usual antics of surprising batsman with his very first ball as he skittled over the Wokingham batsman’s stumps with the very first ball of Wokingham’s innings, three balls later G.Khan claimed another victim and Stoke Green were buzzing with Wokingham on 0-2. Wickets soon dried up as Wokingham’s batsman put up a defence but was short lived as Ifraz Khan was brought into the attack and ended up with a successful 4 wickets to his name. With the light getting dark and the ball becoming hard to see Stoke Green skipper brought on his slower bowlers and the reliable Mazhar Hussain didn’t disappoint taking the ninth wicket. With the score on 97 and Stoke Green needing one wicket to win with only a few overs left in the game due to bad light Syed Kazmi was brought into the attack, the batsman nicked the ball into wicket keeper Nav Sahota’s gloves and the Greens celebrated in what they thought was the final wicket and victory, the umpire unfortunately didn’t see or hear the nick and called the game off at that point due to bad light.
A great performance once again from Stoke Green provided them with 11 points from the game, with the rub of the green it could easily have been a big 25 points. Stoke Green welcome Farnham Common in their next fixture at home.
