Hurst v Stoke Green Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 30 Jun 2012 at 13.00

Match report
Stoke Green went out to Hurst where they drew against the 2nd placed team. The Greens remain top of the table with a 13 point lead as Kew jumped up to 2nd place.
Skipper Sukh Dhillon won the toss and decided to bat, searching for another 25 points. Vice-captain Dahron Pitt was promoted to open as Gully and Vish were both unavailable. Pitt and Bourne put a 55 run opening partnership before Tim Gillham, Saud Ahmed and Farhan Sheikh fell cheaply for 1,0 and 9, respectiviley. Pitt and Gillham were hard-done by some dodgy umpiring as Raja Ifraz helped rescue the innings with a vital 39. Bourne continued on to 77 as keeper Nav Sahota (15*) and Richard Parker (11) chipped in with a few runs to push the score over 200.
At the half-way stage, the game was equally poised as The Green would have to bowl well to get Hurst all out. Parker started well as he took 4 quick wickets to reduce Hurst to 5-4. Ahmed took another as Pitt kept things tight from the other end. After being 14-5, it seemed like SG were heading for another 25 points however some gritty batting from Hurst made it tough take wickets as clearly they were looking for just the draw. Parker and Ahmed took another wicket each to give further hope at 127-7 but the defensive nature of batting didn't allow The Green's bowlers to make any further inroads. In the end, they walked away with a winning draw and 13 points.
After the game, Dhillon had a lot to say, “The lads were really up for what was our biggest game of the year! There was excitement and confidence in the team before the start which was good to see, even thought we were missing a few players. The track looked very good and I chose to bat to put them under early pressure.
The openers, Dahron and Clive, batted very well and put them on the back foot early. The stand was broken by the first appeal of the day to their umpire, Dahron was very unlucky to be given leg before. He was not as unlucky as Tim who was adjudged caught behind after missing it by a long way!! We knew what we were up against after that and just had to get on with it and play to our ability. We did well to get to 200 even though we continued to not get the rub of the green at one end!
We came out with a positive mind-set and put them under some serious pressure at 15-5, with Richard bowling with some good rhythm and pace. He bowled excellently once again on a placid and flat pitch. We had few very good shouts which weren’t given from one end and after the new ball lost its shine, batting became incredibly easy and they batted for the draw. This once disappointing to see but expected after the start they had. We surrounded the bat and allowed them runs but they were focused on blocking!
Overall this was a great result against the best team we have played in the league so far, it keeps us top and gives us more confidence as we approach the second half of the season.”
The Greens now face Theale & Tilehurst as their final encounter before the 2nd round starts, with promotion looking likely.
